Imagination Is an Investment Skill

Financial models describe what can be observed today. At technological inflections, imagination is the disciplined ability to consider what the same system could become when an important constraint disappears.

Research questionWhich constraint does this technology remove—and what follows if it does?

Quantification needs a forward view

Professional investing rightly values revenue, cash flow, market share, and comparable-company analysis. These tools describe what can be observed today and remain essential to disciplined underwriting.

At a technological inflection, however, they are not sufficient by themselves. A new capability may matter precisely because it changes the system that produced today’s metrics.

Look beyond the first use case

New platforms are often underestimated because their first applications appear narrow. The more useful question is how a capability changes the economics, speed, or accessibility of a broader system once it becomes reliable and widely available.

A lower-cost or more capable technology can unlock new customers, new workflows, and entirely new categories of demand. The addressable market should be considered as something that may be created, not merely inherited.

Constraints define what becomes possible

Many apparent limits are not permanent limits; they are constraints imposed by cost, engineering capability, speed, or access. When one of those constraints falls, the range of viable business models can expand quickly.

The investment task is to identify which constraint is changing, why it is changing now, and which adjacent parts of the system must also develop for the opportunity to become commercially meaningful.

Distinguish possibility from fantasy

Imagination in underwriting is not optimism. It means mapping a credible sequence from technical capability to customer value, commercial adoption, and durable advantage—then rigorously testing each step.

The responsibility is to distinguish a genuine technological possibility from a story that cannot survive evidence. Doing that work before consensus forms is an essential part of frontier investing.
